Senior tutor, Ruth Boaler presents the Myofascial Release - with breathing and relaxation.

What is the Fascia?
All muscles are wrapped in 'fascia' - a connective web-like tissue matrix that runs in planes and sheets all through the body. This includes muscle, bone, nerve and artery, heart, lungs brain and spinal cord. Fascia has the ability to stretch and move without restriction. However, when we experiences physical or emotional trauma, scarring, or inflammation, however, the fascia loses its pliability. It becomes tight, restricted, and a source of tension to the rest of the body.  The following programme is designed to relieve the student of tension and discomfort and to restore balance to the fascia.

This session includes the following:

  • suggestions for when and where to practice
  • key benefits
  • when to use the myofascial release programme as a body prep
  • how to use the mofascial release programme for injury prevention


1. In the supine (lying on your back). This includes:

  • activating the relaxation response - preparatory movement
  • presented in 5 stages - arm raise, leg hugging with phase 1 and 2 with 'threading', the Cross - with additional stretch 1 and 2, shoulder twist and shoulder lock
  • a counter pose

2. In the prone (lying on your front). This includes:

  • quadrqcepts stretch (with and without a strap)
  • the Child - with optional stretch to the sides

This session ends in the Makarasana - the Crocodile, with emphasis on relaxing and releasing tension.  

Have a strap and a cushion available.

Thank you once again Ruth and Annie - I’m finding it is helping my musculoskeletal condition to practice this class in the mornings - especially in the cold winter months. It gives a wonderful sense of release for body and mind and I’m ready to embrace the day ahead. Namaste

Ruth Very beneficial talking through the musculoskeletal areas moved in each posture. I only had enough time to get to the point where you moved onto the piriformis. Tomorrow evening I will complete. All the tutors on the Dru on line studio I appreciate. I do have my favourites. A nice combination of you and Annie together, the practical sequences certainly help shift emotions and physical tensions. I am living proof of that. Thanks

Thank you Ruth and Annie for this therapeutic session…..after a lot of standing in the last few days I hadn’t realised how tight I had become. This session was great for stretching out the muscles and fascia around the whole spine and releasing pressure on my lower back. Am going to build this into my yoga practice. Namaste!

Thank you Ruth for this lovely relaxing stretching session. Having fractured my shoulder 2 weeks ago, I am using this session to stretch my body very gently all be it with limited arm movement and caution. It is lovely to be able to some yoga.

Many thanks for this great class Ruth! I shared it with my student today in her regular one-to-one session and received some great feedback...she loved it! We especially liked the cross with added shoulder twist. A really effective movement and wonderful stretch.
