Dru Yoga teacher training - FAQs

How is Dru different from other types of yoga?

There are many different types of yoga and the difference between them depends on what they focus on.

The Dru course offers a complete package of personal development, structure for your practice at home, skills to teach and practical ways to give back to the world.

Many people appreciate Dru because anyone can do it, regardless of age, body shape or ability.

Dru is a graceful and potent form of yoga, based on soft flowing movements, directed breathing and visualisation.

It is deeply relaxing and rejuvenating, yet it can take you to any level of fitness you’d like, improving your strength, flexibility and building core stability.

Dru specialises in integrating your body, mind and spirit.

Dru uses classical yoga and meditation techniques to help you to positively transform how you think and keep your emotions uplifted, and it revitalises your body too.

You will always feel great when you do Dru!

About one third of our students do the course for their own personal growth

What if I don’t want to teach?
Can I do the course for my own personal development?

About one third of our students do the course for their own personal growth, knowing that Dru’s deep insights into the body-mind system will make a huge contribution to their lives.

These students find the ‘teacher-training’ aspects of the course very beneficial: the course material on the subtle energetics of rapport building, communication and classroom dynamics will help you in almost any personal, group or leadership setting.

The teaching practices we guide you through are fun, supportive and help you experience the benefits of the techniques more profoundly.

And you will make an amazing journey of self development with other like-minded people who are likely to become friends for life.

Without doubt or exception being part of the Dru teacher training is the best decision I have made in 57 years on this planet.

How is the course content arranged?

During the first half of the course we introduce you to the foundations of Dru Yoga – essential principles, postures, sequences, pranayama, meditation, anatomy and physiology. Some communication and teaching skills are also introduced during this time.

In the second half we continue to refine and develop your understanding of Dru Yoga and how it works, and how to develop specific therapeutic programmes for individuals according to their unique requirements. We also introduce new material and revisit aspects of posture work and sequences, taking your understanding and experience of these to a deeper level. It is an experiential course.

Can I choose a different training format?

You can train across the world! In Australasia you can train in Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, Melbourne, Perth, Albury Wodonga, Canberra and Nelson, New Zealand. These locations run courses in varying formats, ranging from one day to 4-day modules.

Homework and continuous assessment

Students may begin teaching small groups approximately half way through the course if they pass their interim assessment.

Four assignments are given during the course.

Part of the assessment includes a structured journal of 'portfolio sheets' on the practices, which give you an invaluable reference guide.

Will the course pay for itself? When can I start teaching?

You can begin teaching informally from half way through the course after an interim assessment.

If you gather a group of 6 friends weekly, and then in the first 18 months after graduating teach about 12 people, you will have earned money well beyond the entire course costs. Pretty good really!

Do you allow payments for the course to be extended beyond the end of the course?

Yes, we always try to meet the needs of our students with a wide range of payment options, which give you choices on how often you pay and how long you pay for the course.

What does the course cost cover & are there additional costs?

The course cost covers tuition, course manuals and morning and afternoon refreshments. For the time that you are a participant of the course, you will also have unlimited access to the Dru yoga on-line studio which has 100's of free classes and to the Dru Star Lounge, a special area for our students where you will be able to access recordings of the practices taught on the course.

At every module a range of supportive books, yoga equipment, DVDs and CDs are available for sale.

What is the selection process for the course?

The senior tutors make their selection of course participants based on the information provided in your application form and if necessary on further discussions with you or your referees.

What happens if I miss some course days?

We are an international school and our syllabus is standard throughout the world.

If you miss day(s) you can catch up in two ways. You can do this locally in a one-to-one or group session (at tutor’s discretion – and there is an additional cost), or you can catch up by visiting another Dru Yoga course elsewhere (anywhere in the world!) when that part of the course is being taught. Anyone for a holiday overseas?

How much of a time commitment is the course?

The time commitment varies from person to person, although most students would practice daily or every second day for around 10 to 20 minutes. A few practice less than this, but many practice more, knowing how much this enhances their lives!

Of course how much time you spend on the theory side is up to you but portfolio review sheets are simply deeper reflections of your practice. How much time you spend on assignments and course book reading will vary with each individual, however single parents and full time workers have been able to take on the course and still meet the demands of their busy lives.
