The power of light

Celebrating the healing power of light

Light has always been a metaphor for an inner experience of connectedness, transcendence, and joy. When you sense it, it can lift your entire day, your week, or even change your life forever. Many meditators experience this in brief moments and find themselves seeking it more deeply. One powerful way to tap into this light is by helping others experience it. Teachers, especially, have a unique advantage. Dru teachers are trained in many ways to help people connect with the radiant brilliance of life within, a force that is inherently healing. This page offers a few pointers on how to bring more light into your life and the world around you.

What are your experiences of healing with light?

Savitri and Andrew had a treasured experience in Bosnia.

Shortly after the World Peace Flame (WPF) came together, they were leading a week-long training for refugee leaders from all three conflicting cultures—Serb, Croat, and Bosnian. This was just after the war had ended. While all the participants were good people, they were deeply traumatised by what had happened to their families and friends. Communication between them was fraught with pain.

They quickly realised that trying to get them to talk to each other directly was futile. Instead, they taught them body, heart, and mind movements, relaxation techniques, meditations, and therapies designed to help them reconnect with their inner empowerment and healing. By the end of each day, they felt quite content and even happy and by the morning of the fifth day, they were beginning to connect with the radiance of their inner light. They reached a state of inner connectedness, and the significance of their traumas started to fade.

There had been many ups and downs during the retreat—mini conflicts and reconciliations, all driven by deep pain. One woman stood out—a tall, strong, muscular figure, often with a scowl. Every time she spoke, her words seemed to spark tension, revealing the immense pain she carried.

Towards the end of the retreat, Savitri introduced the World Peace Flame.

She explained that it was lit by peacemakers like them and symbolised the light within each of us. Thomas Jefferson speaks of the light of awareness and knowledge, and throughout the retreat, we had done our best to smooth over conflicts. Each participant was given a World Peace Flame and asked to reflect on the actions they would take to bring healing into the world.

One participant, a Bosnian doctor, stood up and shared a heartfelt revelation: “All my life, I’ve wanted to heal. Now I realise that true healing comes from helping people live together as a community. This light I’m holding is inspiring me to enter local politics, to become a councillor, and to do everything I can to unite our cultures.” Tears flowed down her face as she spoke.

At that moment, the scowling woman rose and began walking slowly around the circle towards the Bosnian doctor. The room fell silent as everyone held their breath, trusting in the light that had begun to grow within. When she reached the doctor, instead of speaking, she wrapped her arms around her in a warm embrace. Her once hard expression softened into a radiant smile, and with tears in her eyes, she said, “Thank you, thank you, thank you—this is what will bring healing to our land.”

These two women, who had clashed before, were now united in a profound reconciliation. It was a monumental moment, a true blossoming of care, compassion, and friendship.

In that instant, we all understood the real power of light.
