The HEART centre. This is number 4 of the 7 main energy centres and plays a very important role in transforming energy from the lower centres (which have to do with the way we treat ourselves and those around us), up to our higher centres (which eventually connect us to the Universe or the spiritual realm or however we perceive it). The chakras gradually rise from the gross to the more subtle... as such, anahata or the heart chakra, is an enormously important centre to work with. For those who have an awareness of colours, the heart centre is an exquisite translucent green, rather like a magnificent shining emerald or a canopy of leaves in early summer with the sunlight shining through them. During the course of our lives it really is highly unlikely that our heart centre will remain... more

Often referred to as the Eyebrow Centre or the Third Eye, the Ajna chakra is located behind the centre of the eyebrows near the pineal gland. The Sanskrit word means ‘command’ or ‘summoning’. So in what sense is it the command centre? It is the centre where we connect to our intuition with clarity, and this  intuition then commands us to act, directing us on our path. It is the centre of our intellect and of the subconscious mind. For many it is the centre where we see beyond the material world, where some experience the psychic realm. The element of ajna is light and the colour is indigo, that vast, spacious night sky sometimes speckled with stars...The ajna symbol depicts a lotus with two petals, white or translucent, representing the Ida and pingala nadis coming together before they... more

For those of us on our spiritual journey there are many, many different paths to follow; for those of us on our yogic paths the choice classically narrows, but there are still choices:
RAJA YOGA - Royal yoga, following the eightfold path
JNANA YOGA - the yoga of knowledge/wisdom
KARMA YOGA - the yoga of action
BHAKTI YOGA - the yoga of devotion
I learned about these some time ago, and like many others, I have to some extent, have followed elements of all four paths... learning to meditate and control my mind (Raja), studying the scriptures (Jnana), volunteering my time and skills (Karma) and learning how to open my heart, seeing the goodness and beauty (divinity) within everything and everyone (Bhakti). So which path to follow?... Arjuna quizzes... more

I have been reading a novel, The Overstory, by Richard Powers and the subject matter is close to my heart being all about trees... their importance for the planet and therefore the continuing existence of Homo Sapiens Sapiens (not just ‘wise’ man but wise man who knows he is wise!)
Some of us are lucky enough to feel and to know that we are all connected ...not only with each other and all other creatures... but with everything in the entire Universe. Not everyone on the planet gets that though, so it’s not surprising that at this crucial time in the history of our planet, when so many people are holding up their hands in despair that climate change recommendations are not being adhered to, others simply wish to carry on as they were, either disbelieving the claims of scientists... more

This week I have heard about the sudden death of a person in our village and the slightly less sudden but equally devastating death of someone who had been to my yoga classes a few years ago. The former was in her seventies, the latter in her late twenties. Turn on the radio, TV or look at social media and the top story is Corona virus and how many people are dying as a result.
All reminders that we are mortals. So how does our understanding of our mortality impact us? Well it certainly can provoke FEAR, fear of the unknown and what is beyond this life. It can provoke a determination to keep ourselves as fit and healthy as possible in order to prolong life. It can provoke a desire to make the most of every single day that we are alive.
Keeping ourselves as fit and... more

LETTING GO OR DROPPING AWAY?
The Autumn is the perfect season in which to contemplate and practise letting go... we only have to look at the deciduous trees in a temperate climate to appreciate this. The word deciduous is defined thus, ‘the dropping of a part that is no longer needed’. As daylight hours decrease, photosynthesis declines, the leaves start to change colour and eventually drop off in a complex process known as abscission. This process can take quite a long time... but possibly not as long as it takes us as humans to let go of the things which we no longer need!
What can also often happen in the autumn is that we sometimes experience severe weather conditions, strong winds, gales, storms and frosts. The trees that have been hanging on to their leaves in... more

What? ...Contentment...even in the time of Covid 19...How could this be possible?... This may well be your reaction, particularly if you have been experiencing any of the following... Feeling annoyed and irritable Feeling disappointed that your plans have had to go down the plug hole Feeling really uncertain about how this will all unfold Missing your dearly loved ones Desperate to get out and socialize with others Feeling pretty bored Feeling so angry because everything has changed Feeling anxious about your own health and that of other people Feeling really scared about a whole range of issues including work, lack of income, running out of essentials… So how wonderful would it be to experience contentment in spite of all of the above? You may not be surprised to know... more
